Scotiabank reports Q3 profit down, provision for credit losses up

TORONTO — Scotiabank reported its third-quarter profit fell compared with a year ago as its provision for credit losses nearly doubled.The bank says its net income amounted to $2.21 billion or $1.72 per diluted share for the quarter ended July 31, down from $2.59 billion or $2.09 per diluted share a year earlier.Revenue for the quarter totalled $8.09 billion, up from $7.80 billion.Scotiabank’s provision for credit losses totalled $819 million in its latest quarter, up from $412 million in the same quarter last year.On an adjusted basis, the bank says it earned $1.73 per diluted share, down from an adjusted profit of $2.10 per diluted share a year ago.Analysts on average had expected an adjusted profit of $1.74 per share, according to estimates compiled by financial markets data firm Refinitiv.This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 29, 2023.Companies in this story: (TSX:BNS)The Canadian Press

(WFLA) — Idalia strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane early Tuesday and is expected to rapidly intensify in the Gulf of Mexico.The National Hurricane Center said Idalia is about 370 miles south-southwest of Tampa. The storm's winds increased to 75 mph.Idalia is forecast to make landfall along the northwest Gulf Coast of Florida some time on Wednesday as a Category 3 major hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. As of the 5 a.m. update, Idalia was over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, moving north at 14 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. The NHC shifted Idalia's track slightly west. Water well runs dry at Bastrop homeless shelter

BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) — As we all endure this heat, a homeless shelter and soup kitchen in Bastrop is struggling to stay open.For the last 10 days, the In the Streets-Hands Up High Ministry hasn’t had any water. Its well went dry and now, it’s in need of a costly $25,000 repair.Without water, the ministry is unable to serve food from its soup kitchen. On average, the local nonprofit dishes out 100-175 free meals a day. Vehicle inspection system back in operation, DPS says

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Department of Public Safety said Monday its system to inspect vehicles had been fixed after a hardware failure last week. DPS said there was "no longer an interruption to service at this time."A hardware failure that started on Aug. 23 led to an outage at the vehicle inspection system, DPS said. Department workers were able to replace the damaged hardware over the weekend and finalize testing overnight on Sunday in order to allow inspections to resume on Monday morning, according to DPS. RELATED: DPS reports vehicle inspection system outage The department said the outage would not allow stations in "safety-only" counties to conduct proper vehicle inspections. Station license renewal applications were also unavailable, according to DPS. The department said the issue did not impact emission inspections.

Registration is available online. Residential Austin Energy customers can attend a virtual meeting on Zoom at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, according to AE. This multi-act revue built around what pop radio was pumping onto the airwaves in the late 1960s actually hasn’t stopped in the Twin Cities since 2019.
