SAN DIEGO -- Surfers took to the waters Thursday amid a high surf warning in San Diego County.Around 4:45 p.m., SkyFOX captured surfers riding the massive waves at Torrey Pines. One surfer was seen catching a wave and then immediately aborting it, catching big air and falling headfirst into the water. Another surfer was caught riding a wave for at least 20 seconds before coming to a halt.In southern San Diego County, wave sets to 15 feet were reported in Imperial Beach and Sunset Cliffs, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).Earlier Thursday, FOX 5's Megan Healy spoke to City of San Diego Lifeguard Chief James Gartland, saying they have beefed up their staff for the high surf warning.High surf and dangerous rip currents will last until Sunday with waves of eight to 15 feet in southern San Diego County, per NWS. FARGO, N.D. — A historic flood warning for the Red River in December may have weather watchers and the general public wondering what season we’re in.Select river points are rising in the southern Red River basin due to excessive, unseasonable rainfall, which also contributed to a damaging ice storm over the past few days.“We believe this is the first,” said Carl Jones, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, about a flood warning in December.Since 2003, when the weather service there began its current format of flood warnings, it has not issued such a warning in December, he said.It has issued multiple flood warnings outside of the spring and summer months, including September, October and November, and once in February of 2017.But up until now, a flood warning had not been issued in December or in January.Most Red River Valley flooding happens in the spring from snow melt and occasionally in the summer from heavy rains or thunderstorms.“It’s very unusual in...

If you saw the band Boston in its ‘70s heyday you’ll know they had two killer guitarists, not just one. The one that you can still see up close at a club gig is Barry Goudreau.Goudreau left the superstar band in 1980, and in recent years he’s arguably been the most visible member of Boston’s classic lineup. He led two recording bands, RTZ and Orion the Hunter, and worked extensively with fellow Boston alums Brad Delp and Sib Hashian (both now deceased). There’ll be plenty of Boston in the set when his current band the Engine Room plays City Winery on Saturday. But the band has two albums worth of solid original songs to draw from as well. Regarding work days lost, union strikes in 2023 were the largest in 40 years — big enough to affect the overall job market.But it would be premature to declare a resurgence of the U.S. labor movement or to argue that most workers would have benefitted from one.The historical trendline is unmistakable: In 2022, one in 10 U.S. workers belonged to a union, down from one in seven in 1996 and one in five in 1983, when the first comparable data were collected.
